Helotes has 9,630 residents (ACS 2024 5-year) and heats differently from the other 2000s suburbs. In the ACS 2024 5-year house-heating-fuel series (table B25040), 44.5% of occupied homes use utility gas, 50.2% electricity, 1.9% LP gas and 1.0% wood, the highest utility-gas share of any 2000s-era town on this site; the wider 78023 ZIP is 37.2% gas. The typical Helotes fireplace is a gas log set or direct-vent unit behind a stone-veneer surround.
The median home was built in 2006, 69.8% of units date from 2000 or later and 27.7% from 1970–1999; 97.0% of the 2,945 occupied units are owner-occupied. Helotes grew 16.0% from 2020 to 2025 (Census Vintage 2025 estimate: 10,387).
The name comes from the Spanish for corn ("el Puerto de los Olotes," 1723). Dr. George F. Marnoch built the first permanent home in 1858, John T. Floore Country Store opened in 1946 and the first Cornyval was held in 1966. Helotes incorporated in October 1981 as a Type A general-law city as San Antonio's growth arrived, and the Old Town revitalisation was completed in 2011. Only 2.5% of homes predate 1970; next door, Grey Forest (median year built 1949, 58.8% gas heat) holds the oldest chimneys on the northwest side.

For fireboxes that still burn wood a few evenings a winter, and for any unit untouched since the builder left: flue, smoke chamber, refractory panels and damper.
Screened stainless caps keep live-oak litter, ball moss and nests out of an idle flue and act as spark arrestors. Chimney swifts are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act; an occupied flue is capped after they leave, generally late October to February under Texas-wide guidance.
On April 9–10, 2022 a brush fire on JBSA-Camp Bullis, which borders the far-northwest side, grew past 4,000 acres; about 150 residents of Oak Ridge and Georg Oaks along Ammann Road were evacuated, with no injuries and no occupied buildings damaged. Bexar County's outdoor-burning order effective November 11, 2025 covered unincorporated land around Helotes such as Grey Forest and Scenic Oaks for 90 days. Neither touches an indoor fireplace, but both argue for a spark-screened cap and a clear roof.
Live oaks drop their old leaves in late January through March, and the Forest Service's February-to-June no-prune window for oak wilt means limb trimming over a chimney is best booked July through January. Helotes Development Services issues permits under the 2021 IBC, IRC, IFC, IPMC and IPC and the 2020 NEC via the MyGovernmentOnline portal; gas inserts and rebuilds are the jobs most likely to need one. Outside the city limits, permits vary by city; your contractor confirms.
Typical national ranges from Fixr (2025) and Angi via Bob Vila (2023), estimates, not quotes: gas fireplace repair $200–$1,000 (thermocouple $75–$150; gas valve $150–$300), a sweep by flue type $85–$250 for a gas fireplace, a chimney cap installed $300–$600. Gas piping is plumbing in Texas (Occupations Code 1301.002(7)), so any gas line work is done only by a Texas-licensed plumber or, for propane, a Railroad Commission-licensed LP-gas company. Burner and log-set service is separate; ask whether the company holds a TDLR ACR (TACL) license for that work, and always ask who will touch the gas.
Yes. A gas log set in an open masonry or prefab firebox vents through the same flue a wood fire would, and an uncapped flue on an oak lot collects leaf litter, ball moss and nests through the idle March-to-November stretch. A screened cap also acts as a spark arrestor near the wildland edge.
The Texas A&M Forest Service asks Texans not to prune or wound oaks from February through June, when the sap beetles that spread oak wilt are most active, and to paint every oak wound immediately year-round. Scheduling limb work around the cap for July through January fits that advice and clears the roof before the fall sweep.
